The Viking phenomenon
Revisiting the Vikings: An Overview of Current Research
The Viking Age, from c.750 to 1050 CE, saw an unprecedented expansion of the Scandinavian peoples into the wider world, ranging from eastern North America to the Asian steppe. This talk provides an overview of current themes in Viking studies, based around an ongoing ten-year research project at Uppsala University.
Fact and Fiction: the Vikings in Popular Culture
This second class addresses the popular perception of the Vikings, reviewing more than a millennium of mediation and appropriation from medieval monks to the Victorians, the Nazis, and through to the mass-market entertainment of our own times.
No application needed. The lecture is free of charge, and made possible by economic funding from Folkuniversitetsföreningen.
